Sincerely Folks: Take the My 70s TV Childhood Quiz #69

Welcome back to My 70’s TV Childhood and to Quiz #69.

This week, we are heading back to the world of Opportunity Knocks, New Faces, Saturday morning television, school holiday favourites, theme tunes and classic 1970s TV trivia.

As always, there are questions across four rounds, plus a bonus question at the end. Have a go, keep score, and let us know how you get on.

Before we start, a quick reminder that we are still gathering interest in the My 70’s TV Childhood Theme Tune Game.

It is a nostalgia-filled game based on the TV theme tunes we all remember, designed to be played around the table with family and friends.

There is no commitment to buy at this stage. We are simply seeing who might be interested if the game goes ahead.

If you would like to hear more, pop your name and email address below and we will keep you updated.

Let’s Go!

Round 1: Britain Had Talent!

I will give you the name of a famous performer and you have to tell me whether they got their big break on Opportunity Knocks or New Faces. You have a 50% chance of getting each one right!

  1. Frank Carson
  2. Marti Caine
  3. Showaddywaddy
  4. Paul Daniels
  5. Paperlace

Round 2: Marathon/Fil Rouge

Named in honour of the recurring rounds in It’s a Knockout and Jeux Sans Frontières, these questions all refer to things covered in previous episodes of the podcast. If you are a regular listener, you may have a slight advantage, though I would not count on it.

  1. Opportunity Knocks! featured in June 2025. What was the name of the device which measured the studio audience’s response to each act?
  2. That staple of school holidays, The Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, featured in August 2023. What was the name of the Austrian actor who played the title role?
  3. Sticking with holiday TV, The Flashing Blade was the subject of an episode in August last year. What was the name of the lead character in the show?
  4. In February this year I looked back at Ripping Yarns. In the episode Tompkinson’s Schooldays, what is the name of the school involved?
  5. In June 2024 I featured Bod. What was the name of Bod’s aunt?

Round 3: Name That Tune, 1977

The Wheel of Fate has landed on 1977 this week, which I think is a particularly strong year for theme tunes.

You will need to tune into the podcast for this round.

Round 4: TV Times

Our general 70s TV trivia round. No particular theme this week, just five questions covering the full breadth of what British television had to offer in the 1970s.

  1. Who was the first presenter of the ITV blooper show It’ll Be Alright on the Night”.
  2. Which music and comedy group featured in the BBC show The Coal Hole Club?
  3. Police Five was a long-running crime-solving show featuring Shaw Taylor, who gave out details of crimes to ask for the public’s help. What was his sign-off, which became his catchphrase?
  4. Who played The Man from Atlantis in the US show of the same name?
  5. What was the full name of the BBC Saturday morning show Swap Shop?

Bonus Question

Last week I asked you: in the famous episode of Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads? called “No Hiding Place”, Bob and Terry desperately try to avoid finding out the score from an England football match in Bulgaria. When they finally sit down to watch, the match has been postponed. What sporting event is shown in its place?

The answer is the European Figure Skating Championships from Vienna. And if you said ice skating, I think that counts too. Well done if you got that one.

This Week’s Bonus Question

This week’s bonus question is: TV technicians in ITV companies went on a work-to-rule protest between 13th November 1970 and 8th February 1971. What did they stop doing?

Want the answers now?

And if you want to check your answer against this week’s full set of answers straight away, simply pop your name and email address into the box below and we will send you directly to the answers.

If you would rather wait, the answers will be reveled here on Friday.

Either way, I would love to know how you got on. Drop your score to quiz@my70stvchildhood.com or leave a comment on any of our social media pages. I read every single one.

We are back next week with a regular episode and in a fortnight with Quiz 70. Until then, thank you for playing.

Take care,

Oliver
