Hello and welcome back to the best (and quite possibly only) fortnightly 70s TV trivia podcast!
This is our 65th quiz, which means we’ve now lobbed over 1,300 questions at you lovely lot. Well done if you’ve attempted them all.
Right, let’s crack on. As always, there are 20 questions across four rounds. Grab a pen and paper, pour yourself something nice, and let’s go!
Round 1: Name the Franchise!
I’ll play you the theme identity tune for five 1970’s ITV franchises and you have to tell me the name of the company. You’ll need to listen to the podcast for this one!
Round 2: Marathon/Fil Rouge
Think you’ve been paying attention to our previous episodes? Let’s find out. These questions span everything from hip presenters to bleak sci-fi.
1️⃣ In September 2025 we looked back at Magpie, the show many of us pretended to like better than Blue Peter because it was more hip and trendy. What was the name of the heartthrob presenter with dark curly hair who presented the show between 1972 and 1980?
2️⃣ Still in 2025 we went back to the days when Kung Fu was a ratings favourite. Who played the lead role in the show, the monk Kwai Chang Caine?
3️⃣ In January 2024 we remembered the rather bleak vision of the future shown in “Survivors.” Which Doctor Who writer created the show?
4️⃣ Sitcoms featured in June 2021 including “On the Buses” featuring Reg Varney and Co. What was the name of the bus company in the show?
5️⃣ We have recently celebrated our 200th episode. In what month of which year was the first episode released?
Round 3: Name That Tune (1971)
Five theme tunes from shows first shown on UK TV in 1971. You’ll need to tune in to the podcast to play this round properly!
Round 4: TV Times
Our general 70s TV trivia round. No theme here, just good old-fashioned questions.
1️⃣ In which year was the classic film “The Wizard of Oz” first broadcast on UK network television?
2️⃣ “The Invisible Man” series featured David McCallum as a scientist who managed to make himself invisible. What was the scientist’s name?
3️⃣ Which actor starred in both “Planet of the Apes” and “The Fantastic Journey,” each of which were short-lived US TV shows shown at Saturday teatime in the UK?
4️⃣ What was the name of the BBC children’s series shown in 1975 where the population of Britain attacked and destroyed all machinery and technology?
5️⃣ How many flying ducks were on Hilda Ogden’s “murial” wallcovering in “Coronation Street?”
Bonus Question
Last Week’s Bonus: What colour was Barbapapa, the French animated shape shifting blobby type thing?
This Week’s Bonus: Which US TV detective often left a room only to come straight back in and say “just one more thing…”?
Are you feeling smug, or was that a bit of a challenge? Let me know how you got on! Thanks for playing along.
Until next time, take care and have fun!
Oliver
