Only 70s Kids Remember These Hanna-Barbera Catchphrases
Welcome back to My 70s TV Childhood and to Quiz #70
This week we are celebrating our 70th quiz, which feels like a rather satisfying number for a podcast about the 1970s. We have Hanna-Barbera catchphrases, classic British TV trivia, the Wheel of Fate landing on 1979 for Name That Tune, and our regular Marathon/Fil Rouge round. As always, there are questions across four rounds, plus a bonus question at the end. Have a go, keep score, and let us know how you get on.
Before we start, a quick reminder that we are getting very close to launching the My 70s TV Childhood Theme Tune Game.
It is a nostalgic family game based on the classic British TV theme tunes we all remember, designed to be played around the table with family and friends. The perfect gift for anyone who grew up with 1970s British television.
If you would like to hear more, pop your name and email address below and we will keep you updated.
Let’s Go!
Round 1: Yabba Dabba Doo!
I will give you a catchphrase associated with a character from a Hanna-Barbera cartoon show and all you have to tell me is whose catchphrase it is. As an example, “Yabba Dabba Doo!” is the catchphrase of Fred Flintstone. Easy enough in theory.
Question 1: “Heavens to Murgatroyd!”
Question 2: “I hate meeces to pieces!”
Question 3: “Smarter than the average bear!”
Question 4: “Drat, drat and double drat!”
Question 5: “Augie, my son, my son!”
Round 2: Marathon/Fil Rouge
Named in honour of the recurring rounds in It’s a Knockout and Jeux Sans Frontières, these questions all refer to things covered in previous episodes of the podcast. If you are a regular listener, you may have a slight advantage, though I would not count on it.
Question 1: March 2024 saw me feature “Wacky Races.” Who drove car number 6, the Army Surplus Special?
Question 2: Way back in October 2020 I looked at some of the programmes designed for under-fives shown at lunchtime on ITV. Which show featured the death of the main character when the actor who played him unexpectedly died?
Question 3: “Michael Bentine’s Potty Time” was the show featured in a November 2025 episode. Which famous radio comedy group did Michael Bentine originally star in?
Question 4: I looked back at “The Good Life” in September 2024. Where was the series set?
Question 5: “Fantasy Island” featured in December 2023. What was the name of Mr Roarke’s assistant, played by Hervé Villechaize?
Round 3: Name That Tune, 1979
The Wheel of Fate has landed on 1979 this week, which I think is a particularly strong year for theme tunes.
You will need to tune into the podcast for this round.
Round 4: TV Times
Our general 70s TV trivia round. No particular theme this week, just five questions covering the full breadth of what British television had to offer in the 1970s.
Question 1: In which year did “John Craven’s Newsround” broadcast its first episode?
Question 2: Who was the original host of ITV’s “The Krypton Factor?”
Question 3: What was different about the episode of “Blue Peter” shown on BBC1 on 14th September 1970?
Question 4: Ernest Bishop was probably one of the dullest characters ever to feature in “Coronation Street.” What happened to him on 11th January 1978 which ensured his place in the show’s folklore?
Question 5: The Carla Lane comedy show “Butterflies” first aired in 1978 and featured Wendy Craig as Ria Parkinson considering an affair. What was the profession of her husband Ben, played by Geoffrey Palmer?
Bonus Question
Last week I asked you: TV technicians in ITV companies went on a work-to-rule protest between 13th November 1970 and 8th February 1971. What did they stop doing?
The answer will be revealed with this week’s full answers. Well done if you got it.
This Week’s Bonus Question
This week’s bonus question is: how old was Clive Dunn when he was first cast as Corporal Jones in the long-running sitcom “Dad’s Army?”
Want the answers now?
If you want to check your answers against this week’s full set of answers straight away, simply pop your name and email address into the box below and we will send you directly to the answers.
If you would rather wait, the answers will be revealed here on Friday.
