Do You Remember These Classic School Holiday TV Shows?

Welcome back to My 70s TV Childhood and to Quiz #72.

This week we are heading back to those long school holiday mornings in the 1970s, when the television was on and something brilliant was always about to start. Round One is all about the shows that filled our summers, from much-loved animated series to adventure stories we watched again and again every single year. A quick note before we start: some of the shows mentioned were made before the 1970s but were endlessly repeated and are very much part of our 70s TV childhood. As always, there are questions across four rounds, plus a bonus question at the end. Have a go, keep score, and let us know how you get on.

Before we start, a quick reminder that we are about to start production on the My 70s TV Childhood Theme Tune Game.

It is a nostalgic family game based on the classic British TV theme tunes we all remember, designed to be played around the table with family and friends. The perfect gift for anyone who grew up with 1970s British television, and any profits will go straight back into helping with the costs of producing the podcast.

If you would like to hear more, pop your name and email address below and we will keep you updated.

Let’s Go!

Round 1: Summer Holiday

Five questions about the school holiday morning shows that filled our summers in the 1970s. A note: some of these shows were made before the 70s but were endlessly repeated, and they are all very much part of our 70s TV childhood.

Question 1: Which country did the oft-repeated animated series “Asterix the Gaul” come from?

Question 2: Another often-repeated show was “The Crab with the Golden Claws” from Hergé’s Adventures of Tintin. What was the name of Tintin’s nautical sidekick?

Question 3: What was the full title of “Why Don’t You?”

Question 4: Who played Robinson Crusoe in “The Adventures of Robinson Crusoe?”

Question 5: In the much-loved animated show “Noggin the Nog,” what was the name of Noggin’s father, whom he inherited the throne from?

Round 2: Marathon/Fil Rouge

Named in honour of the recurring rounds in It’s a Knockout and Jeux Sans Frontières, these questions all refer to things covered in previous episodes of the podcast. If you are a regular listener, you may have a slight advantage, though I would not count on it.

Question 1: In July 2021 we remembered 1970s summers which sometimes involved a trip to the cinema. What TV spin-off was the highest-grossing UK box office film in 1971?

Question 2: In our second episode, way back in September 2020, we discussed the potential relationship between Kiki the Frog and Hector in which children’s TV show?

Question 3: Bagpuss featured in March 2025 in what has been a very popular episode. How many episodes of Bagpuss were produced?

Question 4: We shared some of your lovely comments in July 2025 in our very own “Points of View” episode. Who was the original host of “Points of View?”

Question 5: September 2024 saw us look back fondly at ITV pre-school show “Rainbow.” What was the name of the original singing group on the show which later became Rod, Jane and Freddy?

Round 3: Name That Tune, 1976

The Wheel of Fate has landed on 1976 this week. Five theme tunes from shows first broadcast on UK TV in 1976.

You will need to tune into the podcast for this round.

Round 4: TV Times

Our general 70s TV trivia round. No particular theme this week, just five questions covering the full breadth of what British television had to offer in the 1970s.

Question 1: ITV soap “Emmerdale Farm” began in 1972. What was the original name of the village where it is set?

Question 2: BBC police drama “Softly, Softly: Task Force” was a spin-off from which other TV programme?

Question 3: Which “Blue Peter” presenter left the show to appear on serious economics show “The Money Programme?”

Question 4: In “The Bionic Woman,” what was Jamie Sommers’ original profession before she became bionic?

Question 5: The title character of which Japanese TV show, dubbed into English, was, according to the opening titles, “born from an egg on a mountain top?”

Bonus Question

Last week I asked you: the inaugural final of which sports tournament was shown live on BBC TV on 21st June 1975?

The answer will be revealed with this week’s full answers. Well done if you got it.

This Week’s Bonus Question

Still on the Summer Holiday theme: we all watched The Adventures of Champion the Wonder Horse, which was made in the 1950s but repeated over decades like so many other holiday shows. Who sang the famous theme tune?
